Publications List

The following is a more-or-less complete list of my technical publishing credits, plus a couple odds and ends that I have links for.

Books

  • Absolute FreeBSD new!
  • PGP and GPG
  • Cisco Routers for the Desperate
  • Absolute OpenBSD: UNIX for the Practical Paranoid
  • Absolute BSD: The Ultimate Guide to FreeBSD

    USENIX

  • ;login:, vol 30 no. 5, FreeBSD 5 SMPng. (This article will be available online after October 2006.)

    O'Reilly Network

I had a column with the O'Reilly Network called Big Scary Daemons for several years. (The name is an acronym for BSD.) It's part of their BSD DevCenter, and has been running since 2000.

The O'Reilly Network also runs OnLamp.com. I have a few articles there, to wit:

  • Where have all the IPs gone?
  • Proper Paranoia
  • Practical Paranoia

    BSDToday.com

  • Configuring Shared Libraries

    Sys Admin articles

  • Maintaining Patch Levels with Open-source BSDs
  • Linux under FreeBSD
  • FreeBSD for the SVR4/Linux administrator
  • FreeBSD Firewall Tools & Techniques (not available online).
  • FreeBSD's Sysctl Interface (not available online).

If you're interested in an article that's not available on-line, check the Sys Admin web site for back issue order information.

    Linux.com

This article originally appeared on Linux.com, but they've cleaned out a bunch of their older stuff. Since I can't think of anything more indignant that a damp ferret, I'm reposting it here.

  • Crazed Ferrets in a Berkeley Shower

    LinuxWorld.com

  • Customizing the FreeBSD Kernel for the Linux Administrator

    UnixReview.com

  • The State of the Daemon
  • review of Multiview Catalyst

    Writing I haven't done

Every so often, I get a piece of email asking me if I am the Michael Lucas who wrote such-and-such. What follows is a list of books I have not written, even though my name appears on the cover. All my future books will give my name as "Michael W. Lucas", to help avoid confusion.

  • Satan's Government
  • Aspects of Conrad's Literary Language
  • Understanding Business : Environments
  • The Western Alliance After Inf: Redefining U.S. Policy Toward Europe and the Soviet Union
  • Attachments for Prosthetic Dentistry: Introduction and Application
  • Handbook of the Acoustic Characteristics of Turbomachinery Cavities

Just for reference, I am also not the actor who owns www.michaellucas.com. Trust me on that. Really.

    Non-technical writing I've done

  • I used to be heavily into role-playing games -- no, not computer ones, the paper and pencil sort. I even went to far as to write one, which is still available from Grey Ghost Press.
  • The Gatecrasher RPG

Fiction is cool, too. The fiction market has not merely gone into the toilet, though, it's been flushed, so I don't spend as much time there as I would like. My fiction has appeared in the following anthologies:

  • Women who Run with the Werewolves
  • Horror Library, vol. 2
